YuSheng consists of strips of raw fish mixed with shredded vegetables and a variety of condiments and sauces.

Eating YuSheng during Chinese New Year is a cultural activity for Chinese living in Singapore and Malaysia, it is served as part of a multi-dish dinner, usually as the appetizer due to its symbolism of "good luck" for the new year, and it is customary to gather the families and friends to toss the ingredients while saying auspicious well-wishes out loud to usher in good luck.
