Luohanguo or monk fruit, its extract is nearly 300 times sweeter than sugar, has been used in China as a low-calorie sweetener and in traditional Chinese medicine, mainly for cough and sore throat.

The Chinese have had luohanguo as a healthy sweetener and healing remedy for many centuries. The fruits are usually dried before further use and are sold in this fashion in many Chinese herbal shops.
